Most of the Great Pee Dee River is surrounded by floodplain forest.
The scenic river offers 120 species of fish, 25 rare plant species, 17 species of migratory duck, and several endangered and threatened species – like the American alligator, red-cockaded woodpecker, bald eagle and swallow-tailed kite.
