The bronze statue in Cheraw captures his personality perfectly: puffy cheeks, closed eyes and a bent trumpet. The Dizzy Gillespie statue brings this jazz icon to life on the Cheraw Town Green. Born in Cheraw or “Chee-raw” as he liked to say, Dizzy Gillespie was the pioneer behind modern jazz or “bebop” style music.
In his hometown, you can explore Dizzy’s roots and the Gillespie Home Site Park complete with unique park benches and the actual notes to “Salt Peanuts” along the steel fence. On the Town Green, you’ll find the 7-foot bronze statue of Dizzy with his bent horn. Join Cheraw the third week in October each year as they celebrate Dizzy Gillespie’s birthday with the South Carolina Jazz Festival. Join the fun and bebop down the streets during the parade in honor of Cheraw’s most famous son.
